The Cascade Tunnel, Washington State
Fall 2008 we took a vacation to the Pacific Northwest and one of the stops along the way was the Cascade Tunnel east of Seattle, Washington. The tunnel can be seen along Route 2 (Stephens Pass). The tunnel is open on the west side. On the east side, the tunnel has a door that closes in order for the fans on the east side to blow the engine exhast out the west side. The scenery in that area is fantastic. If you get a chance you should also take a walk on the Iron Goat trail The train follows the original railroad grade showing the original tunnels and snowsheds that protected the line against avalanches.
